Modern Eden Gallery is pleased to announceVergissmeinnicht (Forget Me Not), the solo debut of Seattle-based artist, Redd Walitzki. For this show, Redd Walitzki draws her inspiration from the dark German fairy tales of her heritage and the wistful feelings evoked by leaving one's habitual environment behind.
Her dreamlike figures are at one with their lush surroundings and they bring to life a compelling world of fleeting beauty. This beauty is made more poignant by the aura of loss that emanates from these painted sirens. They invite us to an illusory world we may never fully enter and remind us that the complexity of our natural world is slowly disappearing.
Redd Walitzkipaints sensual portraits of ethereal yet slightly-feral, fairytale women. Influenced by the old world Rococo ornamentation of her native Bavaria, Redd creates intricate, swirling laser cut wood canvases whose flourishes echo her fluid use of paint and mixed-media materials. Her technicolor muses enact a dreamily erotic exploration of both the lure of fleeting modern day high fashion glamor (her subjects are often wearing luminous eye makeup and glossy lipstick) as well as the original meaning of the term glamor, which in ancient times referred to illusory shapeshifting used by supernatural beings to perilously enchant hapless humans.
