Exhibition Dates: September 13 - October 12, 2014
Modern Eden Gallery is pleased to announce Our Ghosts Are Hungry, How About You?, the exciting debut solo exhibition of Bay Area painter, Matthew Robertson. Robertson was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from the Academy of Art University in 2012 with a BFA in illustration. He currently lives and works in Berkeley, California.
‘A great deal of my creative energy is focused on developing a visual language that uses elements of both realism and abstraction to describe a subject. ‘Our Ghosts Are Hungry, How About You?’ is a series of narrative paintings on childhood. Visually, these images explore the dissonance that arises when realism is paired with the abbreviation and exaggeration of form.’ -Matthew Robertson
Robertson’s technical oil paintings are simultaneously chaotic and controlled as he masterfully weaves the two components into one canvas to intuitively explore the tenuous balance between real and abstract forms. The new series vibrates with a sense of innocence described by bold colors, geometric forms, and spontaneous lines which merge together harmoniously with an expert sense of realism, to create work that is both nostalgic and contemporary.
The exhibition will be on display through October 12, 2014 and is free and open to the public.
