With clean lines and a flat, limited color palette, Emily Fromm employs a style reminiscent of vintage cartoons and comic books to illustrate contemporary urban landscapes. Having been raised in the outskirts of Los Angeles, she was heavily influenced by the over-the-top yet seedy aesthetic of the American west, and highlights signage, architecture and the iconic style of the region in her paintings. She applies a nostalgic graphic style to these settings, incorporating imagery that is mundane and often low brow, to contrast these grandiose scenes with everyday life.
Since earning her BA in Studio Art from San Francisco State University in 2013, Fromm has exhibited her paintings at numerous Northern California galleries including The Luggage Store Gallery, STUDIO Gallery, Mighty Box Gallery and Incline Gallery. She also curates community art shows for The Honey Hive Gallery in San Francisco, illustrates for several magazines and publishing houses, and works as a custom muralist. Previous clients include Ulysses Press, Insomniac Events, FomaLabs, Front, IfOnly.com, SourceClear and others.
