Hitchens was an English American author and journalist whose career spanned more than 4 decades. He was a columnist and literary critic forThe New Statesman, The Atlantic, The Nation, The Daily Mirror, and Vanity Fair. He was a prominent public intellectual and his confrontational style of debate made him both a lauded and controversial figure. He was known for his scathing critiques of well-loved public figures. A noted critic of religion and a self-described “Anti-theist”, he believed that the concept of a supreme being is a totalitarian belief that destroy individual freedom.
